There is more to consider when it comes to socialising or travelling after your laryngectomy but it’s not impossible. Here’s some tips to help increase your confidence when going out.
You might find yourself daunted by the idea of an overseas holiday or even just a trip down the road to a friend’s house after your surgery. You may ask yourself the following “what do I need to bring?”, “what if something happens to my voice prosthesis?”, “where can I get help if I need it?”
While it’s important that you consider the risks, it shouldn’t stop you from doing what you normally would. Next time you plan on going out, work your way through this list to make sure you’re prepared.
What products should I bring?
In addition to the products you use on a daily basis, it’s a good idea to bring a few extras just to be on the safe side. For example, bring extra HMEs, adhesives, wipes, cleaning towels and a spare voice prosthesis brush.
Will I need different products for my trip?
If you are going to a place where the climate is different from where you live, consider packing different products. For example, if you are going to a place where the air is very dry, an HME with increased moisture would be helpful. Check with your clinician or call the Atos Customer Care team for more specific advice about your trip.
What should I do if my voice prosthesis leaks?
If you start to notice any sort of leakage while you’re away, you will need to get your voice prosthesis replaced. You could discuss with your clinician whether you should carry an extra voice prosthesis with you just in case. Also, make sure you bring a plug you can use while travelling until you’re able to get the new prosthesis inserted.
Where can I get my voice prosthesis changed?
You can always contact our Atos Care Customer Care team before you leave and ask them for information on nearby hospitals. We are located in many countries around the world and will be able to help you in most cases, or at least find someone locally who can point you in the right direction.
What is important to remember when travelling by air?
If you are flying to your destination, the air can typically be very dry. To help your lungs and minimise coughing, consider wearing an HME that retains as much moisture as possible. Sometimes you may also want extra filtration (e.g. with a Provox Life Protect HME) to protect you from airborne germs. Ask your clinician if you have any questions before you take off.
What should I do if I don’t speak the language where I’m going?
You might need to get some of your papers translated so you can access help where you are going. You can also contact us before leaving and ask whether there is an Atos Medical office where you are going. If there is, you can be reassured that an English-speaking customer service team is nearby.
What is important when it comes to travel insurance?
Travel insurance varies from company to company, so you should call your own insurance company and check your coverage before leaving. It’s also a good idea to let them know about your laryngectomy so they are aware of the situation, in case they are contacted while you are away.
